By City Ordinance weeds must be kept shorter than 10 inches on all lots within the City Limits. Additionally, the property owner is responsible for maintaining that part of public right of way adjacent to their property. See chapter 5, section 5-3-1(H)(8) of the City Code Book.
The City is also working closely with Gunnison County to establish education and information sources concerning noxious weeds. The City received a grant in 2003 from the State of Colorado to help with this process. The Gunnison Basin Weed Commission was established on July 1, 1990. The Commission is a six member board composed of qualified representatives appointed by Gunnison, Hinsdale and Saquache Counties. The Weed Commission's role is to oversee and coordinate the Gunnison River Watershed Integrated Weed Management Plan.
