Lights & Sirens

In 2003 the Gunnison Police Department headed up a committee to create the Lights & Sirens Community Board. The focus of this nonprofit organization will be to establish a fund to support a wide range of activities within our community. The funds will be built by raising money through community based activities, donations, and other worthwhile projects.

The funds that are raised will be used in many ways. The Lights & Sirens program will have an emergency fund for members of our community who are faced with a tragedy. The fund will also be to promote positive youth activities (including D.A.R.E.) Within our community, and in the future, for various scholarships.

The Light & Sirens Committee Board consists of volunteers from the Gunnison area Emergency Services: Law Enforcement, Gunnison Valley Volunteer Fire Department, EMS, and Gunnison Communications. The name was derived from a fund raising event that was held after the tragic events of 9-11-01, when the local Emergency Services held a basketball tournament to raise money for the 9-11 victims. The event was a huge success due to the community support received. The tournament was put on again last year and the money raised was donated locally.

Because of the success of the Lights & Sirens Basketball Tournament, it was decided to make the tournament an annual event. It was also decided to expand on this idea and create a Softball Tournament as well. This was also a success and will be an annual summer event. The next Softball Tournament is set for the first weekend of June, 2004, and the 3rd annual Basketball Tournament will be in the Fall of 2003. We welcome any team or individual who would like to participate and have fun for a worthy cause.
