Community Resourse Office

The Community Resource Officer (CRO) is responsible for coordinating prevention, safety and other outreach activities and programs in Gunnison. Currently, the core programs provided by the CRO include:

• Kindergarten through 4th grade D.A.R.E. program
• 5th grade core D.A.R.E. Program
• Project ALERT in the 6th and 7th grades
• Assisting High School groups with their prevention activities; This includes health classes, Student Leadership and the Courage to Live group
• Coordinating the student/citizen police academy; an extended studies class
that is offered through Western State College
• Coordinating Safe Ride of Gunnison, inc., a free tipsi taxi service
• Providing free child safety seat checks
• Coffee With a Cop; an outreach program at WSC
• Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)
• Social Responsibility Training (SRT)

In addition to these activities, the Gunnison Police Department works with other groups and agencies to promote safety and prevention. Through ADAD grant funding we have helped the RE1J School District and WSC to add a Prevention Education Coordinator
who will oversee activities and prevention programs in the schools. Many of these activities and programs are also supported by the same grant funding.

Gunnison Police Department officers also take part in programs with the Gunnison community including the Good Neighbor program, WSC resident life staff training, orientation programming and safety presentation for the resident halls.

Prevention partners with the Police Department include:
• The Gunnison County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership (GCSAPP)
• The Gunnison Watershed School District
• Western State College
• Family Advocacy and Support Team (FAST)
• The Domestic Violence Coalition
• The Multicultural Advisory Board
• The Colorado Department of Human Services and ADAD
