Officers can conduct a security survey on the structure of business to identify areas of concern. Recommendations are given to the business owner to enhance items like key access, locks, and lighting. Businesses are always encouraged to have burglar systems, security cameras, lock all doors and keep interior and exterior areas illuminated at night. Businesses can sign up for Nixle to receive real time text message alerts the police department issues. Officers are available to owners and managers for anti-shoplifting presentations.
Officers provide safety and crime prevention talks to students and staff at Western State College. Officers are available to assist with the WSC law enforcement class, athletic events, Residence Life meetings, student government, and freshman orientations.
Is a partnership with the community directed toward the goal of helping new residents better understand local ordinances, decrease disturbing the peace complaints, and minimize underage consumption of alcohol. Citizens are encouraged to introduce themselves to their neighbors, exchange names and talk to each other when problems arise. The Gunnison Police Department is available to assist residents whose parties get out of hand to disperse guests before an official complaint is made.
The department works with the school’s staff and administration to create an overall safe school environment. This includes teaching D.A.R.E., attending monthly administration meetings, assisting with the Taylor Challenge, talks with Youth City Council, helping with the Partners program, coaching athletics, talks on bike safety, and schools emergency response planning.
The Gunnison Police Department holds the premise that community policing is a philosophy not a program. Community policing is a philosophy wherein the police and community identify ways, means, and reasons for shared responsibility in fighting community crime and disorder problems. It possesses two core components: Problem Solving & Community Partnership. Every officer participates in community policing and their individual goals reflect this philosophy.
