MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Gunnison Parks and Recreation Department is to provide a variety of quality recreation programs and events in a safe, healthy atmosphere, and to effectively develop and maintain park and recreation facilities for the community's use and enjoyment, which together enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors of/to the City of Gunnison.

PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

Our main goal is to provide active and equal participation for all participants and to assist each individual in reaching their maximum potential. We are teaching young people a continuing life skill and in no way want to discourage any individual from participating. Our programs sometimes involve competitive games, but winning these games is not our major emphasis. We are teaching people the skills of a sport and the development of friendships and the promotion of sportsmanship. The following principles will be applied in all Gunnison Parks and Recreation youth sports programs, with the exception of Travel Competitive Programs:

The Parks and Recreation Department recognizes that emphasis on winning/player performance intensifies as youth programs progress into travel/competitive teams. Guidelines for these travel/competitive teams shall be created by the Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the respective coaches for each program.
