Utility Billing

The City of Gunnison provides electric, water, sewer, refuse (trash), and recycling service to residents within the city limits.
The City provides electric service for selected customers outside the city limits.

 

Sign Up or Cancel Services

To establish utility services in your name:
  • Complete Application for Utility Services.
  • Pay Deposit. All renters are required to pay a deposit at the time services are established. Deposit amounts start at $100, but can be more depending on the residence. Deposits are held on the account and applied to the final billing when the account is closed.
  • When you move, YOU must contact City Finance Dept otherwise you remain legally responsible for all utility services.

To remove utility services out of your name:

  • Contact Finance Dept Staff in person at the City Municipal Building or by calling on the telephone.
  • We will read the meter on the day you request.
  • A final bill will be prepared on our regular billing cycle at the end of the month.
  • The final bill will reflect all charges, less the deposit (if any).
  • Credit balances will be refunded within 2 weeks of the final bill processing.

Payments

Payments are due on the 10th of each month.
There are several ways to pay a utility bill: Cash or Money Order Check Visa MasterCard Discover
  • In Person: Payments are accepted at 201 W Virginia Ave., the City Municipal Building. We are open Monday-Friday from 8 am-5 pm. We are closed on City holidays. Use cash, money order, check or credit card.
  • Telephone: Payments may be made by calling 970-641-8070 Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm. Use a credit card.
  • Drop Boxes: There is a drop slot in the north door of the City Municipal Building. There is also a drive-through drop box located in the alley between the City Municipal Building and the First Baptist Church. Do not pay with cash when using drop boxes. Use a check or money order.
  • Mail: Send payments to City Finance Dept, PO Box 239, Gunnison, CO 81230. Do not mail cash. Use a check or money order.
  • Automatic Payment Plan: Your utility bill payment can be made automatically on the 10th of each month from your checking account, savings account, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.

Assistance Programs

L.E.A.P. – Low Energy Assistance Program is administered by Gunnison County Dept of Human Services.

Energy Smart Colorado - A federally-funded program to help residents in Eagle, Pitkin, and Gunnison Counties make energy improvements to their homes.

Budget Billing Agreement Application - The Customer will pay a monthly amount that is based on a rolling 12-month average of usage. The average is recalculated during each billing cycle using the most recent 12 months and dropping off the oldest months. The amount is not a fixed amount, but will vary slightly from month to month.

Refuse (Trash) and Recycling

Refuse (Trash) Service: The City provides containers for residents living inside city limits. According to the City Code, "All owners or occupants of premises within the City which are encompassed by the definition of residential users are hereby required to use the garbage and trash collection and disposal system established herein." (Code 1997 12-6-4). Commercial accounts may choose other trash removal companies.

  • There are 3 sizes to choose from: 36 gallon ($16/mo); 66 gallon ($20/mo); and 96 gallon ($24/mo). All trash must fit inside the container. Contact Public Works to arrange for a special pick-up of excess refuse and/or larger items.
  • The containers belong to the City of Gunnison and are to be left behind when moving.
  • If the container is too big or too small email a request to have the container exchanged for a different size.
  • Apartments, mobile homes, and condominiums with 4 or more residential units may have a dumpster available for your use and you may be billed by the City. Check with your landlord for details and to determine the location of your trash pickup. The rate is based upon the frequency of pickup, and the number of units within the complex.

Recycling Service: The City of Gunnison encourages all residences to recycle as much as possible.

  • There is no additional charge to recycle. The cost to pick up your recyclables is included in the refuse fees.
  • Recycling containers may be picked up at Public Works located at 1100 W Virginia Ave.
  • The containers belong to the City of Gunnison and are to be left behind when moving.
  • Recycling is picked up on the same day as your regular refuse collection.

Rates & Misc Info

Utility Rates - Current utility rates are effective January 1, 2009. Rates have not increased during 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012. Additionally, the City of Gunnison's utility rates are the third lowest in the State of Colorado.

Wind Energy Power Credits - The City of Gunnison has wind generated electricity available for its electric customers. The wind energy is sold in 100 kilowatts blocks for an additional $1.70 per block.
